Haiti is a beautiful country that has unfortunately been no stranger to crises. Recently, The Champion Firm learned of an orphanage in Jacmel, Haiti, that is in danger of closing down.
Known as the Tysea Orphanage, this organization has been around since 2012, and currently provides a home, educational resources, and safe haven to more than 30 children.
In an effort to help keep Tysea open, The Champion Firm has made a donation to the orphanage, and lead attorney Darl Champion is now personally stepping in to serve on the Board of Directors for the nonprofit that supports the orphanage, Partners in Global Change. Keep reading to learn more about Tysea and how you can also help make a difference in these children’s lives.
Tysea Orphanage Background
The Tysea Orphanage was originally located in Port au Prince, Haiti. However, violence, loss of infrastructure, and increasing costs in the area made keeping the orphanage in Port au Prince extremely dangerous. In 2021, the orphanage’s founder and main sponsor at the time, Marcel Jean, decided to move the orphanage to its current location in Jacmel. Unfortunately, after moving the orphanage to its new location, Jean encountered challenges that prevented her from continuing to support the orphanage. The organization is now reliant on donations to continue operations.
According to Partners in Global Change, the nonprofit organization managing efforts to support Tysea, there is no public education available to children in Haiti. That’s why resources like Tysea are so valuable. Tysea ensures that the children who live there are able to attend a local (private) Catholic school, and makes sure they have the clothing and educational materials necessary to do so.
The Champion Firm team was saddened to learn that this valuable resource to the local Haitian community is in danger of disappearing. We believe that when we help others, we make the world a better place. That’s why our firm not only made a contribution to help keep the orphanage open, but Darl Champion also took a personal interest in the orphanage and joined its governing Board of Directors.
“It’s the least we can do to help a community that, in many ways, is not unlike ours,” Darl said. “Whether you live in Georgia in the U.S. or in Jacmel in Haiti, children and youths deserve to have access to clean food and water, education, and a roof over their heads at night. This was something that, once our team learned about it, we just couldn’t ignore.”
How You Can Help
We understand that economic pressures are affecting people everywhere in 2023. If you want to make a monetary donation to Tysea, you can do so here, but the orphanage is also looking for assistance through donations other than money. Food, clothing, and educational and medical materials are also in high demand.
