The Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued new guidance suggesting that people should avoid traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating for Halloween this year due to the pandemic. This doesn’t mean you have to miss out on everyone’s favorite spooooky holiday.
These CDC recommended lower risk activities can be safe alternatives:
- Carving or decorating pumpkins with members of your household and displaying them
- Carving or decorating pumpkins outside, at a safe distance, with neighbors or friends
- Decorating your house, apartment, or living space
- Doing a Halloween scavenger hunt where children are given lists of Halloween-themed things to look for while they walk outdoors from house to house admiring Halloween decorations at a distance
- Having a virtual Halloween costume contest
- Having a Halloween movie night with people you live with
- Having a scavenger hunt-style trick-or-treat search with your household members in or around your home rather than going house to house

- Smyrna, GA – traditional hours canceled.

Note that even though most cities have cancelled official Trick-or-Treating hours, many neighborhoods are conducting their own with safety guidelines in place and many local churches and businesses are doing limited Truck-or-Treating.
Safety Tips
For neighborhood trick-or-treats, here are some safety tips:
- Have kids wear reflective, fire-resistant costumes that are short enough to prevent tripping.
- Have them use makeup instead of masks that impair their vision.
- Have them carry a flashlight and be careful crossing streets.
- Keep pets inside during trick-or-treat times.
- Have an adult accompany small children.
- Inspect treats before children eat them.
