Rethinking Case Value Thresholds in an Injury Firm

I understand why a lot of personal injury lawyers have case value thresholds.

It makes sense on paper. It’s just never worked for me because it doesn’t fit who I am.

If I believe we can truly help someone and add value, I want to help. If a case comes to us as a litigation referral because someone is being low-balled and taken advantage of, I want to step in, even if the upside may not justify the time and risk.

If I said no to cases solely because of the dollar amount, I’d have an unsettling feeling that I ignored something that mattered.

Are there costs to this approach? Absolutely.

It requires more people. More systems. More patience. And some of those cases, standing alone, don’t really “pay for themselves.”

There are benefits, though. We have more current and former clients to refer us cases. We have a larger base to get more reviews from, which helps SEO. We can establish relationships with more referral partners.

There’s no universal right or wrong answer.

Owning your own firm means you get to decide what tradeoffs you’re willing to make.

You get to design a practice that aligns with your values, your tolerance for risk, and what lets you sleep at night.

For me, this is one of those decisions.

Others may choose differently, and that’s okay. At the end of the day, you get to make that choice and do what works best for you.
