The Champion Firm Wins Over $780,000 for Officer Struck by Tractor-Trailer

The Champion Firm secured a $780,625 settlement for our client, a police officer who was injured by an out-of-control tractor-trailer while he was conducting a traffic stop on I-75 South in Henry County.

During a routine traffic stop, our client was standing on the shoulder of I-75 in front of the vehicle he had pulled over. A tractor-trailer truck suddenly crashed into the vehicle, which hit our client and threw him down an embankment. He was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital to treat his immediate injuries, reporting pain in his back as well as his left ankle.

After being released from the hospital, our client required treatment at an occupational medicine clinic. The clinic ultimately referred him to an orthopedic doctor. An MRI of his lumbar spine showed a disc bulge at L5-S1, the treatment of which required physical therapy and pain management injections. The injections, however, provided only temporary relief, leaving our client in ongoing pain. The orthopedic doctor further determined the pain was coming from the sacroiliac joint and recommended left sacroiliac joint fusion surgery, which our client underwent. The total cost of his medical expenses came out to $165,000, and he lost an additional $19,500 in wages as a result of his inability to work.
