Although the extremities don’t contain any vital organs, they are still an essential part of the body. When the legs, feet or arms are compromised, you may be unable to walk, write or even dress yourself without assistance. This can dramatically diminish your quality of life, making it impossible for you to enjoy your former activities or hold a job.

Treatment for These Injuries
Many patients will be able to regain most or all of their normal function through treatment. Unfortunately, for other patients, the prognosis is much more grim. In the most severe cases, issues like complex regional pain syndrome or a patient may even lose a limb because of this type of injury.
Some of the most common treatments used to improve the condition of patients with arm, leg, and foot injuries include:
- Setting of bones
- Splints and casts
- Crutches or wheelchairs
- Cleaning and dressing of open wounds
- Surgery
- Medication to alleviate pain and swelling
- Physical therapy to improve mobility
- Steroid shots or other procedures to treat nerve pain
- Antibiotics to prevent infection
- Amputation
The exact treatment protocol recommended will depend on the type of injury and its severity.
